Contrary to the free-to-play model employed by most P2E games, which allows players to earn rewards through gameplay without spending money upfront, Axie Infinity is not a free-to-play P2E; players need to purchase a starter team of Axies (i.e., usually 3 Axies) to begin playing.

Acquiring Axies: How do you get these Axies?

To get started, players need to assemble a starter team of Axies.

These fun creatures come in various classes, such as Aqua, Beast, Reptile, etc., each with its own special abilities. Players can purchase Axies from the in-game marketplace or directly from other players using crypto, typically Ethereum.

Breeding Axies

There are seven classes to explore within the game, namely: 

Aqua, Beast, Bird, Bug, Dawn, Dusk, Mech, Plant, and Reptile. 

Each class edges over the other in several respects, with each having its unique pros and cons.

In addition to these classes, new and unique Axies can also be created by breeding. The game’s breeding strategy is fundamental to population control within the game. To breed, players will need to spend some amount of SLP (smooth love potion) and Ether. The resulting Axies inherit traits from their parents, making each Axie bred genuinely unique.

A complex system of genetic mating hubs and an in-game calculator can be used by players to determine the odds of successful breeding. This encourages the creation of unique and powerful breeds, thus adding depth to the game’s ecosystem.

Battles and Arena

Axies are not just collectibles; they are fighters too. Players can engage in turn-based battles in the Arena, where Axies use their unique abilities to defeat opponents.

When players enter the Arena, they can advance through the ranks in ranked arena battles and join tournaments for more rewards. Winning battles earns players more SLP.  

Also, when playing, strategy is key: you must be able to choose the right Axies to form effective 3-man teams that will guarantee victory.

Land Gameplay

Axie Infinity isn’t limited to battles alone. The developers introduced land gameplay last year.

This land is divided into tokenized plots, which are owned by different landowners and used to house their Axies.

This plot could also serve as the base of operations for their Axies. They can be upgraded over time using a number of resources that can be found when playing the game. 

Thus allowing landowners to develop their virtual land, expanding the game’s universe, Lunacia, and providing new ways to earn rewards.

The Axie Infinity Economy

1. Smooth Love Potion (SLP)

SLP, the native token of Axie Infinity, can be earned through PVP combat or engaging in quests.

It is earned by playing Axie Infinity, a key component of its P2E model, and can be used to breed new Axies. It can also be traded on various exchanges, allowing players to convert their in-game earnings into real money.

SLP serves as Axie’s utility token and can be traded in-game for AXS, another token in the Axie Infinity Ecosystem.

2. AXS Token

AXS is ERC-20 token tradable on the Ethereum network. It is used for governance within the Axie Community and plays a role in determining the game’s future direction.

Its finite supply makes it a scarce asset and so potentially a good store of value in the long term. AXS can also be staked, enabling holders to tie up their coins for more revenue.

3. RON Token

RON is a governance token for Axie Infinity’s Ethereum sidechain—Ronin Network. It’s a layer-2 scaling solution developed to address scalability issues on the Ethereum blockchain.
